Implementing artificial intelligence: A practical 10-step guide

Implementing artificial intelligence (AI) is an exciting journey. However, from conversations with leaders in my network, many are still figuring out the best way to approach this task. Here’s a jargon-free guide to breaking it down into logical steps:

1. Identify needs and opportunities

Start by pinpointing where AI can add the most value to your business. This might include improving customer service (like chatbots), optimizing supply chains, automating repetitive tasks, or gaining insights from data analysis. Assess your starting point and use surveys and one-on-one interviews to uncover promising AI pilot projects.

2. Understand your data

Effective AI solutions rely heavily on data. It’s not just about having data but more about having the correct data, which will make the later steps in the process easier. Evaluate the quality and quantity of your data. Ensure you have enough relevant data for AI to learn and make accurate predictions or decisions. Both structured and unstructured data can be valuable. The more high-quality data you have, the more accurate and reliable your AI system will be.

3. Set clear goals

Decide what you want to achieve with AI. Are you aiming to boost efficiency, cut costs, improve customer experiences, or something else? Clear, well-defined objectives will guide your AI strategy and instil a sense of direction and determination in your team, helping prioritize pilot projects.

4. Build or buy?

Depending on your organization’s capabilities, you can build custom AI solutions or adapt existing ones. Building from scratch requires skilled teams and resources, while buying can be quicker and less resource-intensive.

5. Assemble the right team

If you build your own AI solutions (e.g., a custom language model), you’ll need experts in data science, machine learning, software development, and relevant domain knowledge. If these skills aren’t available internally, consider partnering with external specialists.

6. Choose the right tools and platforms

Numerous AI tools and platforms exist, from cloud-based solutions like AWS, Google Cloud, and Azure to specialized AI applications and frameworks. Select the ones that best suit your organization’s needs, and don’t hesitate to seek expert advice for this step.

7. Train and test

If you’re building an AI model, train it using your data. Follow this with rigorous testing and fine-tuning to ensure it meets your expectations. Regular updates and adjustments are essential, so ensure responsibilities are clear and the task is understood well within your team.

8. Integration and implementation

Incorporate the AI solution into your existing business processes and systems. Ensure it works seamlessly within your current setup. This step often involves reviewing your IT infrastructure, analyzing data quality, assessing scalability, and establishing compliance guidelines.

9. Monitor and maintain

AI systems require ongoing monitoring and maintenance to ensure their performance and accuracy improve over time.

10. Stay informed and compliant

AI is a fast-evolving field. Stay up-to-date with the latest advancements (subscribe to updates, such as on LinkedIn) and ensure your AI usage complies with relevant laws and ethical standards.

Start small and scale up

Begin with small projects and expand as you grow more comfortable with AI. Every business is unique, so tailor these steps to fit your circumstances. Adapt organizational processes and individual skill sets as AI transforms workflows, methods, and collaboration styles.
